How Admins Should Handle Soft or Hard Handicap Caps

Can an admin prevent a soft or hard cap from being applied?

  • No. An administrator cannot prevent a cap from being applied. Admins must wait until a soft or hard cap has been applied before taking any action.

Handling caps for medical reasons

  • Once a cap has been applied, an administrator may make adjustments for medical reasons under Rule 5.8 of the Rules of Handicapping.
  • Adjustments may include modifying or removing the cap.

Recommended steps for admins

  1. Monitor the member’s scores and handicap index as usual.
  2. If a soft or hard cap is applied, review the member’s situation.
  3. If the member has a medical condition or other qualifying reason, adjust or remove the cap following your organization’s policies and the process outlined in Rule 5.8 of the Rules of Handicapping.

If you are the handicap chairperson and have additional questions about adjusting a cap in the system, contact Mike Mason at 602-872-7003 or mike@azgolf.org.
