What is a Handicap Index?

A Handicap Index is a portable measure of a golfer's demonstrated ability, used to calculate a Course Handicap at any rated course.

How many holes do you need to establish a Handicap Index?

To establish a Handicap Index, a golfer must play and post a minimum of 54 holes of scored rounds to their scoring record. Once the 54-hole threshold is met, your initial Handicap Index is calculated automatically (World Handicap System, Rules of Handicapping, Rule 4.5).

How can the 54 holes be completed?

The 54 holes can be completed in any combination of 9-hole and 18-hole rounds, provided each round is played on a golf course with a valid Course Rating and Slope Rating.

How do you post scores to your scoring record?

Scores are posted through an authorized golf association such as the Arizona Golf Association (AGA), or via an approved handicap management system. The official system used by the USGA is GHIN® (Golf Handicap Information Network). To post scores:

1. Log in to your account at ghin.com or open the GHIN mobile app.
2. Select Post a Score.
3. Enter the course played, date, and your adjusted gross score.
4. Select the tees used and confirm the 9-hole or 18-hole round type.
5. Submit the score to save it to your scoring record.
