On which holes do players receive strokes in a competition?
How Are Handicap Strokes Allocated?
Handicap strokes are received based on the stroke index row on the scorecard (sometimes labeled "handicap" on printed scorecards). A player receives one handicap stroke on each hole whose stroke index falls within their Playing Handicap™ — for example, a player with a Playing Handicap™ of 14 receives one stroke on holes allocated 1 through 14. Players with a plus Playing Handicap are required to give strokes back starting with the stroke index 18 hole. (Appendix E, Rules of Handicapping)
