What does Adjusted Gross Score mean for handicap purposes?
What is Adjusted Gross Score (AGS)?
Adjusted Gross Score (AGS) is a player's gross score, including any penalty strokes, adjusted downward when a player exceeds their maximum hole score (Net Double Bogey), does not play a hole, or starts a hole but does not hole out. The adjustment ensures scores are acceptable for handicap calculation purposes. Specifically, an AGS is applied when:
- The player exceeds their maximum hole score (Net Double Bogey) — the score is capped at Net Double Bogey (par + 2 strokes + any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive on that hole),
- A hole is not played — the player records their most likely score (Net Par or better), or
- A hole is started but the player does not hole out — the player records the score they most likely would have made
