What is a Penalty Score?

A penalty score is a score posted at the discretion of the Handicap Committee when a golfer does not post their score on the same day of play. Golfers are expected to post scores the same day to ensure inclusion in the daily playing conditions calculation and to keep their Handicap Index® up-to-date.

How Does the Handicap Committee Determine a Penalty Score?

The Handicap Committee determines the appropriate penalty score based on the intent of the golfer. The committee may choose from the following options:

• High penalty score: equal to the highest Score Differential™ in the golfer’s scoring record.
• Low penalty score: equal to the lowest Score Differential™ in the golfer's scoring record.
• Actual score: posted if the score is discoverable.

Does a Golfer Receive Notice Before a Penalty Score is Posted?

The Handicap Committee does not need to provide the golfer with notice before posting a penalty score.

How Are Penalty Scores Identified in a Scoring Record?

All penalty scores are designated with a “P.” in the scoring record. (Rule 7.1b, Rules of Handicapping)
